Dress Progress, Boo-Boo's and Birdies

Sunday, June 10, 2012

Well I told myself that I was going to have my dress finished this weekend no matter if I had to work through the night.  Didn't happen.  Here's how far I got..

It's going to be so pretty I can't wait.   I have no excuses as to why I don't have it done.  I could blame it on my husband and the three hours I wasted watching Promethus.  It's not very often we go to the movies or go out on a date period so when he offered I jumped at the chance not really caring what we went and seen.  Aliens and Sci Fi have never been my thing but it was a night out and we pigged out at the Amish buffet afterwards.

I did something different this time when cutting out my fabric and used pinking shears.  Has anyone else done this?  I think I need a new pair of pinking shears because mine are really hard to open and close.  By the time I was done I had wore a bloody raw spot on my hand where the handle was rubbing.....

OUCHIE!!

I also lined my all my bodice pieces.  I cut out my lining fabric same as my pretty fabric and sewed the two together so I'd be working with one piece instead of two.  So far it's worked really well.

I'm not quite sure how to do the skirt.  It's gathered so I think it would be rather bulky if I tried to interline it like I did the bodice and then gather.  What do you think?  Have you ever lined a gathered skirt before?  Should I gather both my pretty fabric and my lining fabric separately and then attach them or do I even need to gather my lining fabric?  Vito says he really doesn't give a damn just as long as he gets treats and some attention paid to him already!!...

Oh and here's what happens when you leave your cut pattern pieces laying out on the table and wake to find your husband has let the cat in and he's decided that your fabric feels nice on his behind so he decides to lay on it while licking himself.

I was able to fix it with scotch tape
On a happier note we have barn swallows who love making nests under our deck.  They made a nest again this year which produces a lot of bird shit but watching the baby birdies grow up is so much fun!!  About a week ago I got this awesome picture...

They were all asleep and just as I snapped this picture they popped up and started screaming! I started screaming as well cuz I was so excited.  Ryan had to put a muzzle on me.  If they grow up deaf , well then you can blame me.

So next post will be a finished dress!! Any suggestions on lining the skirt will be greatly appreciated.  Have a good week friends!

  1. Ooh, looking good! I would gather the skirt and the lining separately and attach them together before stitching to the bodice.

  2. My pinking shears are super stiff like that as well- can't believe you persisted until you were so sore! Eek I don't think I have that dedication!
Sounds like you're doing great, looking forward to seeing it!

  3. Oh it's coming along quite nicely! I love the pattern and color.

My suggestion for lining the skirt is to keep the length 1 inch shorter and the bottom opening circumference 1 inch less than the dress itself. Also, add chain tackstitches at side seams to prevent the lining skirt for shifting :)

  5. I've been using that method for lining things too. I know as I make more complicated projects I'll have to learn how to make a real lining, but for some projects this way works just fine.

  7. I have been browsing on-line more than three hours as of late,
but I never discovered any fascinating article like yours.
It's pretty value sufficient for me. Personally, if all website owners and bloggers made good content material as you probably did, the web will likely be a lot more helpful than ever before.
