Completed: Sassy Librarian Blouse
Sunday, August 05, 2012
Finished up the Sassy Librarian Blouse by Christine Haynes this weekend. It was a fun class to take and Christine is an excellent teacher. This is one of my first garments I've completed where I'm not afraid to show off the inside of the blouse (although I forgot to take pictures). My garments aren't always the neatest on the inside. A lot to do with the fact that I get so frustrated sometimes trying to figure out pattern directions and well sometimes I just don't get it so I make it up as I go and I'm sure we all now how that turns out sometimes. So it was really helpful for me to be able to watch someone put together the pattern and tell me the how to's and why's.
I made the sleeveless version with the pintuck detailing on the front that I just love. The fabric is a quilting cotton that I found on clearance and Joann's.
I can see myself making this blouse again but incorporating elements of View 1 with View 2. View 1 has sleeves and a peter pan collar. It's cute but not really my style. I'm thinking this view with the contrasting peter pan collar would look pretty cute.
The front panel has release pleats on both sides and bust darts. The back also has release pleats, a first for me.
I know hard to see against the print. |
The back neck was really wide and gaped open which I'm finding is a common problem with me. Christine suggested adding a dart on each side of the CB. That was a fun challenge for me. I made my darts each an inch wide taking up a total of two inches on the back neck and facing.
I used some vintage buttons I picked up for a dollar at an antique store last weekend. They blend in pretty well and I would of preferred something more stand outish, like a yellow but I really wanted to use these to play along with the vintage feel of the top.
Thank goodness for the automatic buttonholer! I couldn't imagine having to sew all those buttonholes by hand. I had the damndest time trying to get the buttonhole on the tab. For some reason the automatic buttonhole wouldn't work on the tab so I had to do it manually. So it looks kinda sloppy but it's well hidden by the button.
So sassy you say, why yes indeed...
Ok maybe I don't know sassy but I can do smart librarian!!

DeleteThat is exquisite detailing! You look fabulous!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
DeleteOoh sassy indeed! It turned out really cute! I love the contrast in the sleeve/armholes and bow :)
ReplyDeleteI am going to add my first neck darts to a garment too!
Oh and great job with the buttonholes... I've never made them before :O
Thank ya! The buttonholes are a breeze when you have an automatic buttonholer that wants to work. You'll have no probs with the neck darts.
DeleteSo cute! Good job. I wouldn't know where to start with a manual buttonhole. Did you do it by hand or still with the machine?
ReplyDeleteThanks! Well I could only get my buttonholer to do one side. So weird, and if I tried to be smarter than it and flip the garment around to get the other side it just kept going over the same spot. Ahhh!! So I zig zag stitched on the other side with my machine, and cleaned it up by hand cuz it was looking kind of sloppy.
DeleteOh my God you are too cute in this! Great top. The vintage buttons are so neat too. Really, everything about this is fab. Congratulations.
ReplyDeleteThank you!!! This was a fun top to make!
DeleteThis top is beautiful! It's great to have someone to go on learning about the way the pattern and why it does what. Great!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous, I love the print, the perfect union between pattern and fabric. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!!
DeleteVery pretty. I have this course too, I will be delving in at some point.
ReplyDeleteOh I hope to see pictures!!
DeleteThat's SO pretty! Great details and looks so neatly sewn xx
ReplyDeleteThanks! I think it's one of the neater sewn things I've done...so far. ;)
DeleteSuch a pretty top looks so great on you and i love the fabric colours. Did you cut your hair shorter looks so pretty!! Thanks for pointing out this pattern too I'm going to check it out now.
ReplyDeleteYep needed a change so I cut it off. thanks! It was a really fun pattern to make.
DeleteI have started this class too, I must get this made..so cute! Thanks so much for your review..I so agree that Christine is a good and patient teacher. The one thing I don't like about it is that there are no printed instructions so that when we go back to make another we don't have to watch the video again.
ReplyDeleteYes printed directions would of been great! I think the next one I make I'm going do the peter pan collar as they are slowly growing on me and make it a little longer.
