Thrifting Fun & a Wool and the Gang Giveaway

Sunday, May 25, 2014

Yesterday my Mom and I went and did a little antique shopping. We visited two shops that are about a 20 minute drive from my house. The first stop was an antique shop that I could absolutely spend hours in and never get bored. It's three floors with the first floor being the usual antiques...bubble milk glass, jewelry, dishes, pictures, lamps, etc, etc. The second floor, one of my faves, is full of vintage clothing. Shoes, mink coats, polyester suits, Mad Men attire and even a few handmade items.  I even found a few patterns but none that absolutely caught my eye.  The third floor is full of furniture. I've decided. If I'm ever to win the lottery my house will be completely refurnished with antique furniture and lighting. I wish I would of taken pictures of some of the cool pieces I seen but I didn't even think about it and it didn't even dawn on me that this might be a post some or you would consider interesting.

I don't think I've ever left an antique store empty handed.  I love sifting through what others may think is junk and finding little treasures.  I found these little treasures..a bag of various thimbles for $10 to add to my collection.

Isn't the little redhead novelty thimble the cutest?! I must find more.  I honestly didn't know novelty thimbles were a thing.

Our next stop was a flea market.  If your down for a treasure hunt then flea markets just might be your thing. The flea market we visited has approx. 50 booths.  This particular flea market is open year round.  There are approximately 50 booths that are rented out to individuals and they can put literally anything they want in these booths to sell.  I'm serious, ANYTHING from tools to mattresses to used hairbrushes.  Uhh yeah I found a used hairbrush one day, hair in it!!  Some booths are set up real nice, antiques or handmade goods. Others look like the owner opened up their closets loaded all their junk in a garbage bag and brought it to their booth and just poured it all over the floor.  Those are the booths I skip, especially since finding a used hairbrush and a curling iron gummed up with hairspray. wtf people!

Of course my main goal for visiting flea markets is scoring vintage patterns.  I found this ziploc bag full of patterns.  Only problem I could only see the top and bottom patterns.  What was in between those I do not know because it was taped up and tied up like Fort Knox.

The front pattern is McCalls 6906, Home Dec In-A-Sec, circa 1993.  4 curtain patterns, nothing spectacular.
The bottom pattern is Vogue 1754, St. Nick Knacks, circa ???.  11 embroidered ornament patterns. They are actually pretty cute if your into that kind of craftiness.

So do I take the risk?? I tried everything I could to peer in between the layers of what might be. The bag was crammed full and I wasn't even able to get a glimpse of if I'm dealing with all home dec patterns here. I then seen the $1.28 price tag.  How awesome would it be if I found a DVF wrap dress in the mix!?!  I've been searching high and low for one online that's not $60!!  I paid the cashier and left the store with my fingers crossed.
So are you excited as I am!?  I couldn't wait to get home and rip that bag apart.  The second pattern to be discovered was...

pattern2

Wah, wah, waaaa....Simplicity 5950, Bedspread Quilt, circa 1973...Next!

pattern3

Ok that's more like it! Simplicity 8599, circa 1970.  Two collar options, not caring much for the puff sleeves even though that polka dot illustration is super cute.  And who does the girl in green remind you of?  I think I've seen Lladybird strike that pose a time or two. :)

pattern4

I feel as if I'm on the game show Press Your Luck.  No whamies, no whammies, STOP!
Simplicity 7018, Bags & Belts, circa 1975.  Nothing I'm super excited about but it's better than another quilt pattern.

pattern5

Whammy!!  Simplicity 5894, Shag rugs, circa 1973.  Now if I do happen to win the lottery and refurnish my house with all vintage I may just whip me up a shag rug to go with the decor.

pattern6

Holy shite!  Simplicity 5644, circa 1973.  How cute is this bathing suit!?  I love the bottoms, they actually cover your rear!  I've already got my fabric picked out, here.  Just in time for my July vacation.  Florida beaches here I come!

pattern7

And the last pattern, more Christmas crafts, Vogue 1312, circa ???
So no DVF wrap dress but I think I scored pretty well.  Simplicity 5644 and Simplicity 8599 was well worth the $1.28 spent.  Do you enjoy antique shopping or thrifting?  What's your favorite find?

  1. You got lucky with the pattern packet and I'm looking forward to seeing your quilts, shaggy rugs and Christmas decorations on your blog!!! Funny thing is that the seller should have put the dress and bikini patterns top and bottom before sealing it then could have put the price much higher!

  23. how do u make the bow for the girl, its adorable

    ReplyDelete
  24. I just cut a bow shape out of two pieces of fabric. Sewed them together with right sides facing, leaving both ends open so I could flip it right side out. After I turned it right side out I then serged the edges and sewed on the button detail.
