New 7 Part Mini Series: Sewing in Harmony + A Giveaway!
Sunday, August 10, 2014Hello there! During a late night room overhaul I was surrounded by a beautiful bounty of bias tape, rick rack and other various bindings. Spoils of an awesome flea market find. I was carefully organizing by type and color and I thought to myself..I don't know if I find more enjoyment out of organizing my stash or the actual bizness of sewing?!
I often find myself organizing and tidying my room especially after a binge of Pinterest searches and YouTube videos, keywords "sewing room organization". I have come across a lot of good tips and tricks and I've also drooled over a lot of beautiful sewing rooms. An idea struck me to create a mini series in which I share with you things such as, room organization, pattern/fabric/notion organization, ways to build your stash if your starting out and making your space happy. This will be a 7 part mini series titled "Sewing in Harmony" taking place today August 11th and wrapping up September 15th. Whether you have a room designated to sewing or your working from your kitchen table my goal is to help you create a happy organized space. To make this series more interactive I've created a Flickr group, Sewing In Harmony. Please join and share your pictures of storage ideas, decorating ideas or your space. Also join in on discussions of what motivates you to sew and of course any organization tips you have. You can also share your pics on Instagram using hashtag #sewingharmony. Part 7, the series finale will be a video tour of my sewing room. I will also have a link up where you can link your sewing space either by video, blog post or flickr feed. You'll have exactly 6 weeks to prepare for that. I love watching sewing room tours on YouTube so I'm excited to share mine with you and to get a glimpse into yours as well.
The Schedule:
Part 1: Series Introduction & Giveaway Entry...August 11, 2014
Part 2: Setting Up An Efficient Space: Furnishings & Layout...August 18, 2014
Part 3: Pattern Organization: Paper, PDFs & To Sew Lists ...August 25, 2014
Part 4: Fabric: Organization & Building Your Stash ...September 1, 2014
Part 5: Sewing Notions: Organization & Building Your Stash...September 8, 2014
Part 6: Make It Happy: Decorating Your Space...September 15, 2014
Part 7: Room Tour & Link Up + Giveaway Winners Announced...September 22, 2014
What started out as a 4 part mini series at the beginning of writing this post has quickly turned into 7 parts by post end. Once I seen my idea on paper I started to get really excited about it and the ideas started flowing.

Giveaway:
In the midst of all this room organization I've been doing I've come across a lot of things in my stash that I have lots of extras of and just don't need. So to kick off this series I'm going to do a giveaway. These will be a mixture of stuff from my stash plus a few of my favorite things added in. There will be three different giveaways for you to chose from to enter. They are...
Giveway #1: The Sewing Nerd.
Lucky for you I had two of Gertie's book, Gertie's New Book for Better Sewing, in my stash. How'd that happen? Well I got gifted one. This book is a modern guide to sewing using vintage techniques. The book offers 10 patterns each with different variations. I've made the portrait blouse here.
Giveaway #2: I Heart Vintage
One of my favorite things about thrifting is the ziploc bags I find crammed full of vintage notions. They are often taped shut and I'm unable to see everything inside. I can't wait to get home to rip into that bag and unfold all the treasures of sewing past. This giveaway will be just that. A bag full of items I might find while thrifting. There may be patterns, buttons or bias tape. It's all a suprise!!
Giveaway #3: A Few of My Favorite Things
This giveaway will include a few of my favorite things...notions, patterns, fabrics....things I can't live without when it comes to sewing.
- Please be a follower of my blog.
- Follow me on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. (Media follow buttons in sidebar)
- Leave a comment below leaving the number of the giveaway package you would most like to win. Please leave your email address as well.
- Join the Flickr group Sewing in Harmony to learn as well as share organizing tips and sewing room ideas.
- This giveaway is open to everyone in the whole wide world! :)
Winners will be announced in the final series post on September 22nd. You'll have until September 17th to comment below and enter. I'll post reminders on my Twitter and FB page as well as sneaky peeks of prizes.
I hope you all join me in this series!! Please feel free to share this on your social media outlets using hashtag #sewingharmony and grab a button to post on your blog if you like. (This was my first time creating a button and I spend WAY to much time learning how to do it. Please let me know if you have trouble with it.)

Sounds wonderful! I need to improve some of my sewing room organization, doing this as a part of group is so much more enjoyable! I already follow you thought bloglovin, and now through Facebook as well. Hmmm, I guess I would pick #2 as my first choice, then #3. I don't want #1 though, as I already own it so that may be gifted elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteHow fantastic, just what I'm looking for. I have been looking others' sewing set ups online (wipes drool from chin). Our extension and house renovation nears completion, part of which will house my dirty craft and clean craft rooms. I get emotional every time I go in there at the moment as it has been paid with money left to me by my parents. The clean craft room will be dominated by sewing so this series will be great as in the past I have had to sew in varying unsuitable and badly lit areas of our previous homes. I am very excited, but need to be sensible. I already follow you on bloglovin but will now do so on fb too. I am going to join the Flickr group too and post my progress - this is my first foray online documentation. Should I be lucky enough to be a winner I'd love the surprise of 3 but Gertie's book would be great too. I have loads of bits and pieces of my mum's- so many hooks and eyes and perished elastic!
ReplyDeleteAwesome timing batman! I'm trying to get organised at the moment as the state of my stash is depressing me. I already follow you on Bloglovin' and now I follow you on Facebook as well - wondering if we could have an instagram tag as well? I would most like to win giveaway 2. rachellousews at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteAwesome idea! I just updated the post. Use hashtag #sewingharmony to share your pictures on Instagram as well.
ReplyDeleteHappy to have you joining along!!
ReplyDeleteWelcome aboard!!
ReplyDeleteSounds very interesting. I am a very organized person . When it comes to sewing , even more. I would love to read how you do it too :) I would love the giveaway #1. My eyes popped out after seeing that you were giving that wealth away!.Can I have a square button to place it in my side bar? By the way I read all your post from bloglovin ;)
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to the tour of your sewing space! Mine looks alright when it's clean, but I have an unsustainable amount of clutter that really stresses me out! Too much fabric... and what to do with all those pesky scraps?!?!
ReplyDeleteI love reading about organization. Unfortunately I have no room to organize!
ReplyDeleteHaha I also am having techno difficulties. I would love to win giveaway 1 and my email is imadeit362436 at gmail.com. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteYay how fun! I've been trying to get my patterns under control...they're the only thing that doesn't feel terribly organized. I'm a follower via Bloglovin and Instagram, and I'd like...uhhhh...door number three!
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to this series as I am a terrible organizer! I don't have a dedicated sewing room - but I someday I might!
ReplyDeleteI am so looking forward to this series! I just finished my new sewing studio and had lots of fun organizing my stash as well. I can't wait to see your video!
ReplyDeleteI follow on GFC as Mrs. Kathy Davis.
ReplyDeleteI follow on Twitter as .. @kdavis52.
ReplyDeleteI would most like to win giveaway # 3 but would be happy with any one. Thanks,
ReplyDeletekdavis1@centurytel.net
I would most like #1 but would be happy with any of them :)! Thanks, karenspencer.rn at gmail.com
ReplyDeleteMy first pick would be #3. Thank you! sarah@forrussia.org
ReplyDeleteI would love 3# if being in the UK doesn't exclude me - I shall keep fingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteI had totally meant to buy that second Gertie book from you! This is a better solution. Clearly I need some harmony and organization in my life. I actually bought another stack of plastic shoe boxes at Target today to divide and conquer the notions!
ReplyDeleteYou know you've made it sound so much fun to get tidying and organising and doing things with fabric and notions other than .....sewing!! It's a great idea. I'd be most interested in no.3 - I like the personal mysterious idea of it!!
ReplyDeleteYep this is open international! I shall edit my post.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I don't have a dedicated sewing space, but would love to pick up some storage ideas, as I have stuff in several places around the house and as such, can never find anything! I think I already follow you pretty much everywhere, and would love to win no 3, although that are all great prizes!
ReplyDeleteI would love to win the No. 1, Gertie's book. I recently asked a blogger which pattern she used for a dress and it was from Gertie's book, the one that is on the cover. I was looking on Amazon for pricing but it is the right time to sign up for a giveaway! Thanks, Mickey
ReplyDeleteI'm most excited about #3. I love knowing what other people consider must-haves. I also love a surprise! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThis series is great! I need to clear up the clutter in my sewing room (personal sewing store). Please enter me in giveaway #3 (marked as the second #2 but I think that is a typo) because I love surprises. The "favorite things" is enticing!
ReplyDeleteI am SO excited about this! My organization efforts include dumping everything into a box labeled "Notions." My patterns are somewhat more organized, and I at least group them together by type (dresses, skirts, pants, etc) but yes, this is something I desperately need. I also love the giveaway idea, I'd love to be entered in the 3rd one as I was so pleased last time we swapped! :-D
ReplyDeleteOpps! I entered giveaway #3 and forgot my e-mail address which is rosecy@cfl.rr.com. I follow you on the blogger dashboard and facebook. I think that I'll add bloglovin because blogger dashboard appears to be several days late.
ReplyDeleteI am constantly reorganizing my sewing room so I look forward to gaining new ideas. I would most like to win #3. Atruax@mac.com
ReplyDeleteAhh this is awesome - I continue to struggle with sewing room organisation. We move house a lot so I can't do anything permanent or paint, so I do what I can, but I don't have good storage for patterns or notions. Hence, it can be total chaos in there!
ReplyDeleteOh, I am really looking forward to this! My sewing room has been in a state of limbo since we moved in in February. I'm awaiting for a friend to build me some furniture - a workdesk and some shelving - and then I can FINALLY get it set up and organised and I can't wait! Such a choice of giveaways....ummm...maybe number 2?
ReplyDeleteI'm a new follower on Bloglovin and i'd choose #2 as I love fabric, patterns and thread!
ReplyDeleteOh, how great is this, thank you offering this fun giveaway. I'm in the process of making over a bedroom for my creative space. I can't wait to see the tour. I'll toss in for number 3.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like fun! I don't have a dedicated sewing space (yet) but love seeing how others get organised. Difficult to choose on the giveaway but I'll go with #3.
